KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 21, 2022) - Queen's Men's Hockey held a lead until the final minutes of their home opener against the Ottawa Gee-Gees, before Ottawa tied the game late and netted the winner in overtime for a 3-2 win.
After a scoreless first period, three goals were scored in the span of a couple minutes midway through the second.
The Gaels opened the scoring in the second period when
Jonathan Yantsis (Markham, Ont.) found the back of the net on a goal assisted by
Josh Curtis (Winnipeg, Man.) and
Hayden Fowler (Kingston, Ont.).
After the Gee-Gees tied the game, captain
Ryan Cranford (Embrun, Ont.) responded seconds later to give Queen's their second lead of the game. Cranford's goal was assisted by
Holden Katzalay (West Vancouver, B.C.) and
Dalton Duhart (Grand Blanc, Mich.).
Up 2-1 late in the third period, Ottawa would score the equalizer with less than two minutes to play to force overtime. The Gee-Gees found the back of the net early in the extra frame to take home the win.
Queen's outshot the Gee-Gees 23-22 with
Anthony Popovich (Belleville, Ont.) making 19 saves for the Gaels.
The loss dropped Queen's record to 0-3-0 on the season while Ottawa improved their record to 2-1 with the win.
The Gaels return to action Saturday, Oct. 22, hosting the Carleton Ravens at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Centre.
