Queen's Men's Hockey loses tight game late to defending champions UQTR in season opener

Queen's Men's Hockey opened their 2022-23 OUA regular season on the road against the defending U SPORTS Men's Hockey champions, the UQTR Patriotes, losing 6-5 after a last minute goal by the hosts.

After the Patriotes tied the game with a little over two minutes to play in the third period on a goal by Julien Tessier, they followed up with the winner with just 30 seconds left in regulation on a goal scored by Simon Lafrance.

After a scoreless first period, Jack Duff (Kingston, Ont.) opened the scoring for Queen's just 25 seconds into the second period. UQTR would respond with an equalizer before three straight goals for the Gaels, with Hayden Fowler (Kingston, Ont.) netting two and Jonathan Yantsis (Markham, Ont.) one.

UQTR would cut the lead to two before the period was out and tie the game with two early third period goals. Yantsis would respond for Queen's with a power play goal to give the Gaels a 5-4 lead which wasn't surrendered until late in the period.

Fowler led the Gaels with three points (two goals, one assist), while Yantsis (two goals), Duff (one goal, one assist) and Owen Lalonde (two assists) all had multi-point efforts.

Queen's was outshot by the Patriotes 38-34.

The Gaels and Patriotes will complete their doubleheader Saturday at 4 p.m. in Trois Rivieres.
