Athletics & Recreation launches Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Indigenization Task Force

KINGSTON, Ont. - Queen's Athletics & Recreation (A&R) has, with the unanimous support of the University Council on Athletics and Recreation (UCAR), formed an Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Indigenization (EDII) Task Force.

Members include students, faculty, staff, coaches, alumni, and experts with varied backgrounds and experiences. The task force will consult, as needed, with advisors, internal and external to the University, and will provide advice, identify priorities and make recommendations to the Executive Director on matters of policy, practices and operations that impact EDII within A&R.

"It is necessary that we look more deeply into EDII within our athletic community, our programs, services and operations to ensure that our culture and our actions reflect, and seek to advance the principles of EDII in everything we do," said Leslie Dal Cin, Executive Director, Athletics & Recreation.

The work of the Task Force will lead to concrete and achievable plans and actions which strive to dismantle biased systems, foster anti-racism, promote inclusion and allow the A&R community to stand together against hate, intolerance and injustice.

"We have long told athletes that sport helps build character but which character traits we value and prioritize have rightly been put under the microscope. I'm excited for the opportunity to help our student-athletes create a more empathetic and equitable program here at Queen's," said Dr. Courtney Szto, Assistant Professor, School of Kinesiology and Health Studies and A&R EDII Task Force Chair.

A newly created webpage will be updated regularly with Task Force's work, priorities, reflections, experiences and resources.
