Queen’s sees season end in London

LONDON, Ont. (February 29, 2020) - The Queen's Gaels (0-1) dropped a 3-0 decision to the No.10 Western Mustangs (1-0) in the Quigley Cup OUA quarter-final on Saturday afternoon.

GAME FLOW
The opening set saw the teams evenly matched as the score went from 5-5 up to 10-10 after a kill from Danielle Corrigan. From there, the Mustangs took seven of the next nine points and held a 14-11 lead before leading 16-13 at the technical timeout. Western stepped up their defensive play late in the set, keeping the Gaels attack attempts alive. A block from Kate Ferguson and Kate Van Camp sealed the set 25-19 for Western.

The Gaels quickly opened up 2-0 and 4-2 leads in the second set as they looked to capitalize on early Mustang errors in hopes of tying the match up 1-1. After Western scored six straight points to take an 8-4 lead, the Gaels responded and closed to within one after Teah Cook put down a kill to make the Western lead just 10-9. From there, Western struck for another six point run and lead 16-9 at the technical timeout. A Julia Wiercigroch kill got the Gaels to within one at 19-18 but the Mustangs held on, taking advantage of late errors from Queen's to take the set 25-20.

The third set saw Western break out to a 7-2 lead. The Gaels rallied back to take a 10-9 lead but the Mustangs offence was relentless as they went on a 7-1 run to lead 16-11 at the technical timeout. The Gaels got to within one down 18-17 after Danielle Corrigan put down a kill from the middle but Western took the next seven of eight points to take the win 25-18 and 3-0.
