KINGSTON, Ont (January 24, 2020)- The Queen's Gaels (8-5) fall to the Ryerson Rams (12-2) in the first match of home court weekend series 3-1.
GAME FLOW
The first set was not an easy one for the Gaels. The Rams hit the court hot, leading long rallies and hard-hitting offence. However, the Rams did not stunt the Gaels momentum. The Gaels were leading by a single point throughout the majority of the first set. A serving run from
Arielle Palermo that saw her nail four aces on an eight point Gaels run. With the Rams tiring in the final moments of the first, the Gaels had opportunity to pull ahead taking the first 25-21 off a huge kill by
Arielle Palermo.
Things swung in the Rams favor in the second. With a mid-match lead, athletic rallies and continued crushing offence, the Rams did not make defence easy for the Gaels. Despite the Gaels heavy blocks, the Rams managed to hold onto the second set 25-19.
The struggle for the lead continued between the Gaels and Rams through the third set. With
Lauryn Colpitts dominating the defensive side, completing 18 match digs amid strong defensive plays. Despite the Gaels hustle in the final moments of the set, Queen's could not fend off the Rams. Ryerson took the third set 25-21.
The Rams 2-1 lead pushed the match into a fourth set.
Julia Wiercigroch continued to show well on the attack and defence, with 12 match total digs and 11 total match kills. However, the Gaels efforts on defence were not enough to keep the Rams attack at bay. Despite the Gaels momentum in the final moments of the fourth set, the Rams took the fourth 25-21, and the match 3-1.
