Gaels complete undefeated opening weekend with 1-0 victory over Toronto

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 1, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (2-0-0) prevailed with a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-1-0) in front of 250 fans at Richardson Stadium.

GAME FLOW

Both teams began the day following a victory on Saturday. During the first half, the Queen's offence moved the ball well against Toronto. The Gaels racked up four shots on goal in the first half, Toronto goalkeeper Levanta Staggolis was the deciding factor in keeping the Blues from falling behind early.

Early in the second half, Toronto looked revived as they applied pressure to the Queen's goalkeeper Anna Stephenson early on. Stephenson saved back-to-back shots to keep the match scoreless in the 74th minute.

Christie Gray scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute on a pass assisted by Jenny Matsukubo. The Gaels consistent pressure in the closing minutes sealed the victory to propel Queen's to an undefeated opening weekend.

WOLEVER'S RETURN
Former OUA MVP Jenny Wolever made her return to Richardson Stadium as a member of the Varsity Blues. Wolever's return was spoiled as Toronto was shut out by the Gaels tough defence.
