KINGSTON, Ont. (February 23, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (13-6) used straight sets to defeat the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves (1-17) in the Gaels final OUA regular season match of the season ahead of OUA playoffs.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels proved to be too much for the Thunderwolves in the opening set as they went on a 13-2 run to lead 17-7 as attack errors slowed Lakehead in the early going.
After a service error to the Thunderwolves, the Gaels
Arielle Palermo put down a kill to close out the opening set 25-12.
The Gaels followed a similar pattern in the second set going on a 10-1 run to lead 17-7 after a
Caroline Livingston kill.
Jayda Nault put a pair of aces in play for the Gaels and they led 22-8 late int he set. Palermo then picked up the next three points for the Gaels with three kills to give Queen's a 25-11 second set win.
The third set saw the visiting team putting up a strong fight to push the match past three sets. Lakehead's Meghan Routier finished a kill to give the Thunderwolves an 8-7 lead and later served up an ace to make it 13-11 for the visitors. The Gaels took eight of the following 10 points which included back-to-back aces from
Danielle Corrigan as they looked for a three-set finish.
With Lakehead out in front 23-22, a Gaels timeout led to a Palermo kill, a Nault ace and finally a Lakehead attack error giving the Gaels a 25-23 set win and 3-0 match victory.

The Gaels finished in third place in the OUA East and will travel to face the second-seed in the OUA West division to open the playoffs. The opponent will be one of either Brock or Western depending the result of Western's final game. Queen's suffered a 3-2 loss in Kingston to Western and a 3-1 defeat at Brock this season in their only meetings.
