LONDON, Ont. (March 2, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (0-1) who entered playoffs as the third-seed from the OUA East saw their season come to an end after a 3-1 defeat from the OUA West second-seed Western Mustangs (1-0)
GAME FLOW
The Gaels got off to a quick start in London, opening on a 7-1 run thanks to a pair of kills from
Caroline Livingston and errors from the Mustangs. The Gaels continued on from there heading to the technical timeout up 16-8 after an ace from
Arielle Palermo. The Gaels built up enough of a cushion that they were able to take down Western in the opening set 25-19 after a Palermo kill.
The second set saw the two teams stay close before the Mustangs pulled ahead in the late stages as the Gaels attacking errors began to mount. Western closed out the second set 25-20 to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Queen's ran ahead with a 19-16 lead after an ace from
Saffron van der Linde. The Mustangs rallied, however, taking seven of the next eight before splitting the final two to take the set 25-22 and lead 2-1 in the match.
With their season on the line, the Gaels strong serving carried them ahead early in the fourth. An ace from
Julia Wiercigroch put Queen's up 9-4 in the set. The Mustangs battled back and the two sides pushed to a tie at 20-20. Queen's then added four of the next five to open up a 24-21 lead looking to send the match to a fifth set. The home side came through as Carly Kimmett added a pair of kills and Kate Van Camp closed out the match with a kill of her own 26-24 to earn the win.
