SUDBURY, Ont. (February 20, 2019) - The fifth-seeded Queen's Gaels (1-0) pulled off the road upset of the fourth-seeded Laurentian Voyageurs 73-72 on Wednesday night in the opening round of the Wilson Cup playoffs.
GAME FLOW
After Laurentian got out to an early 21-12 lead in the opening quarter, the Gaels turned a corner in the game scoring six straight to close the frame and another two to start the second.
Harry Range came through for the Gaels in the second quarter scoring six points and hitting all three attempts. Queen's totalled 20 points in the second to overtake Laurentian and go into halftime up 38-37.
In the third quarter, the Gaels continued to stay ahead of Laurentian. They extended their lead to as many as 10 points in the frame behind a strong quarter by
Jaz Bains who lead the Gaels with seven of their 20. Heading into the final quarter the Gaels led 58-51.
The fourth quarter saw Laurentian grind their way back into the game. Kadre Gray had four of his 28 points in the fourth for Laurentian with his final two coming from the charity stripe to put Laurentian up 72-71 with just 27 seconds remaining.
From there
Tanner Graham took over. The Gaels ran as much clock as they could and Graham nailed a shot to put Queen's ahead 73-72 with just three seconds left. A final attempt from Laurentian was denied and the Gaels hung on for the victory.
