Gaels finish regular season on high note against No.4 Rams

TORONTO, Ont. (February 16th, 2019) – The Queen's Women's Basketball Team (15-8) defeated the No.4 Ryerson Rams (17-6) by a score of 74 to 70 on Saturday Night at Coca-Cola Court in Toronto.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels struggled against the third place OUA East Rams in the 1st quarter, allowing Ryerson to take far too many shots from right around the basket, which led to 53% shooting for Ryerson. After ten minutes of play, the Gaels trailed the Rams by a score of 25-16.

Early in the second quarter, Sophie de Goede and Veronika Lavergne led the Gaels on the comeback trail, quickly closing the lead to just three points. Unfortunately, three points was as close as Queen's could get in the first half. But after struggling early on, the Gaels were likely happy to be within touching distance trailing by just 6 points at 41 to 35.

Leading the way for the Gaels in the first half statistically was Sophie de Goede with 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

The Gaels continued to struggle offensively in the third quarter, as the Rams played strong interior defense which limited the Gaels' offensive looks. Yet despite this difficulty, the Gaels were able to remain within range of the Rams headed to the fourth and final quarter, trailing by the same margin as half time at 56 to 50.

After trailing since the early stages of the first quarter, the Gaels were finally able to regain the lead in the opening three minutes in the 4th, going ahead by a score of 61-60.

After trading baskets back and forth for most of the remainder of the final quarter, Marianne Alarie hit a huge three-point shot with just 28 seconds remaining to put the Gaels ahead by 4 at 72-68. The 5thyear's clutch shot would prove to be the difference, as the Gaels would hold on for a 74 to 70 win, their 15thof the season.

Marianne Alarie came up huge for the Gaels in the second half, scoring 22 points in the half and 28 points on the night on 57% shooting. Meanwhile Sophie de Goede was formidable on the boards, securing 8 offensive and 12 defensive rebounds.
