TORONTO, Ont. (February 15th, 2019) – The Queen's Women's Basketball Team (14-8) defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues (6-16) 59 to 51 on Friday Night.
GAME FLOW
After a low-scoring first quarter, the Gaels found their offensive groove mid-way through the second quarter, continuing to shut down the Varsity Blues with their 1-3-1 zone defense and jumping out to a 20-10 lead.
Key to the Gaels offensive success in the first half was
Emma Ritcey, who scored 8 points on 3 for 3 shooting from the field (2 for 2 from three) while also recording three rebounds. The Gaels would take a 31 to 18 halftime lead, having limited the Varsity Blues to just 23% shooting in the half.
The Gaels cruised in the 3
rd, taking the quarter by a score of 20 to 17. In the fourth and final quarter, the Varsity Blues threatened to make a game of things, opening the frame on a 6 to 2 run and although the Varsity Blues would end up taking the final quarter 16-8, the Gaels easily held on for a 59 to 51 victory.
Leading the way for the Gaels in the victory was
Emma Ritcey with 14 points, while
Sophie de Goede led the Gaels with 8 rebounds. Queen's out-rebounded the Blues by a margin of 28 to 21, while also limiting the Blues to just 16% shooting from behind the three-point line.
