Gaels hold off Voyageurs comeback, defeat Laurentian 2-1 Friday night

SUDBURY, Ont. (November 22, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (6-4-1-0) defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs (4-6-0-0) on Friday night 2-1 in Sudbury on the first leg of the Gaels northern Ontario road trip.

GAME FLOW
The opening period saw no scoring as both teams looked for the first goal of the night. The play was evenly matched as each side fired seven shots on goal with Laurentian's Shanna Dolighan and the Gaels Makenzy Arsenault both standing tall between the pipes.

A powerplay goal halfway through the second period by Hailey Wilson gave the Gaels their first lead of the day. Alex Maw and Devon Greenough had a hand in on the goal, both landing assists. Queen's had a strong period outshooting Laurentian 11-8 and holding a 1-0 advantage after 40 minutes.

The third period saw Emma McKnight score her first career U SPORTS goal just 2:03 into the third with the lone assist going to Robin Ketcheson giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead over Laurentian.

Laurentian would get on the board with just over ten minutes left in the final period, Natalie Lamarche broke the shutout attempt for Arsenault. Penalty trouble continued to haunt the Voyageurs in the third period as Queen's had three of their five powerplays in the third period.

The momentum for the Gaels special teams slowed the Laurentian comeback bid and the Gaels were able to hang on for the 2-1 regulation victory.

Arsenault finished with 22 saves in the win for Queen's.
