Hotchkiss the hero as Gaels use special teams to come from behind in win over RMC

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 22, 2019) - The longest continuous hockey rivalry in the world got renewed again on Friday night as the Queen's Gaels (6-8-0) were able to come from behind to defeat the RMC Paladins (4-10-0) 4-3.

GAME FLOW
It was a special night for RMC as they donned alternate jerseys and admission was free with donations being accepted for Soldier On Canada (for more information on how to help click here). As a result, the RMC fans and Tricolour supporters were out in full force packing the arena before puck drop.

With the home side fans on their side it was the RMC Paladins that took full advantage in the opening period. First, on the powerplay, Christopher Paquette scored his sixth of the season beating Gaels starting netminder Luke Richardson and giving the Paladins a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later RMC took a 2-0 lead as a quick shot from Rhett Willcox beat Richardson.

Despite outshooting RMC 14-7 in the period the Gaels went to the dressing room down 2-0.

In the second the Gaels were able to cut the deficit in half. Alex Row was able to fire a shot right off the faceoff that beat Brad Van Schubert to give the Gaels their first goal of the night. Just over a minute later, RMC responded as Alex MacDonald restored the two-goal RMC lead.

Before the period was out the Gaels picked up their first of three powerplay goals on the night as RMC began to find themselves in penalty trouble. Nevin Guy scored his first of the season and the Gaels were down just 3-2 after 40 minutes.

In the third, the Tricolour special teams continued their work. First, it was Jared Bethune striking for his fifth of the season deflecting a pass in front to the back of the RMC net. At the 13:40 mark, Matthew Hotchkiss gave Queen's their first lead of the night on a powerplay tally of his own.

The Gaels killed off a pair of late penalties and hung on for a 4-3 victory.

Richardson finished with 19 saves as he picked up the win for Queen's.
