Weltz career highs of 21 points and five steals leads No.7 Gaels to 83-76 win over Toronto

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 22, 2019) - The No.7 Queen's Gaels (6-3) survived a late comeback to defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-7) 83-76 at the Queen's ARC in Kingston on Friday night in women's basketball action.

GAME FLOW

The Gaels established an early lead for as Michelle Istead led Queen's with seven points in the frame and Emma Weltz helped get the Gaels out in front with a nice steal that she turned into two points with a lay-up.

Toronto stayed close throughout the frame and was able to take the lead 18-17 off of a jumper from Nada Radonjic giving Toronto the lead after the frame. 

The Gaels once again started out strong and quickly pulled ahead, a three off of a great passing possession resulted in Isabella Belvedere nailing the wide-open shot to put Queen's up six. The lead reached as many as nine as the Gaels continued to hold the hot hand from beyond the arc but Toronto finished out the frame on a 6-0 run with Sarah Bennett hitting a pair of jumpers to make the halftime score 39-36 Gaels.

The third frame saw the Gaels continue their strong shooting and defensive play. Queen's outscored Toronto 29-16 in the frame building their lead out to 16 as they closed the frame with a Laura Donovan layup to lead 68-52.

The Varsity Blues would simply not go away however as they turned the tables on Queen's in the early stages of the fourth quarter. After the Gaels went up 18 points Toronto went on a 12-2 run to close the gap to just eight points midway through the final quarter.
In the final minutes, the Gaels lead dropped to just five points but strong free-throw shooting from Emma Ritcey and Donovan allowed the Tricolour to hang on for the victory 83-76.
