KINGSTON, Ont. (November 1, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (2-1) picked up their first home win of the season after defeating Guelph Gryphons (0-1) 88-70 on Friday afternoon at the ARC.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels set the tone of the game quickly after
Harry Range made a successful three-point shot that resulted from a defensive rebound by
Henry Van Herk. Queen's furthered their starting domination after
Luka Syllas picked up a steal and turned it into points alongside the efforts of
Henry Van Herk. Luka closed out the first quarter by extending the Gaels lead to 25-10.
The second quarter saw Guelph continue to chip away at the Gaels lead. Queen's was able to get some offensive help in the form of a three-point jump shot scored by Landon Brickendon. Brickendon later made a huge block to stop Guelph which quickly turned into points for Queen's off of a drive by
Cole Syllas. This closed out the second quarter of the game with the score slightly closer at halftime 40-33 Queen's.
Harry Range started off the third quarter scoring just as the shot clock finishes counting down. Guelph continued to use the three to respond to the Gaels offensive play. The Gryphons were able to close the gap in the second half of the third quarter after Aaron Nugent tied it up with a 3-point jump shot all square at 51-51. The Queen's offence was able to answer this surge holding a slight lead at the end of the third quarter with a score of 60-56.
Queen's started the final quarter by playing strong defensively, forcing the Gryphons to run out the shot clock and turn the ball over. Although Guelph had some renewed hope after the third quarter, the Gaels were able to work together to continue their dominant play and extend the gap between the two teams. With the ability of
Connor Keefe,
Harry Range and
Henry Van Herk to draw fouls while still masterfully scoring points on the play, it really opened up the scoring for Queen's which allowed them to pull away from the Gryphons. The final score of the game reflected the Gaels abilities to control the court at 88-70.
