Strong serving powers Gaels to season opening road win at York

TORONTO (October 26, 2019) - The Queens Gaels (1-0) travelled to Toronto for their OUA season opener against the York Lions (0-1) winning 3-1 at the Tait Mckenzie Athletic Centre. This season follows a strong 2018-19 campaign for the Gaels, last year finishing third in the OUA Easter Division.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels took an early lead in the opening set making their way to a 25-21 advantage against the Lions.  York pulled through in set two, accomplishing a 27-25 set win after the two teams were back and forth heading towards 25 before it needed extra points to determine a winner.

With the match evened up at 1-1 heading into the third, Queen's came out on top of the third 25-19 as they looked to close things out heading to the fourth.

The fourth set was well-matched on both sides of the net. However, following some debate from officials, the Gaels were awarded the final point to take a 3-1 win in their first OUA season game. The Gaels finished with a kill percentage of 0.110 compared to just 0.048 for York.

The difference in the match for the Gaels may well have been their serving as the Gaels totalled 17 aces on the afternoon compared to just eight for York.

Arielle Palermo dominated with a total of 17 points making 11 kills and adding five service aces. Julia Wiercigroch followed Palermo with a total of 10 kills, and 13.5 points this match while nothing got past Alexandra Tsiofas, returning Yorks attack attempts with a total of 17 digs.
