Gaels split home-and-home with UOIT

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 5, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (13-5-0) lost the second of a home-and-home 5-1 to the UOIT Ridgebacks (10-5-4) on Saturday night at the Memorial Centre.

MURRAY DOUGLAS
Prior to puck-drop, Gaels defenceman Spencer Abraham was presented as this year's Murray Douglas Scholarship recipient.

GAME FLOW
The opening period saw the visitors looking to get their revenge after falling in a shootout at home on Friday afternoon to the Gaels. Jake Bricknell was able to score his fourth goal of the season near the midway point of the opening period to give UOIT a 1-0 lead.

A second-period sequence shifted the momentum in the game as the Gaels took two penalties one after another and were faced with a long five-on-three powerplay stretch from UOIT.

UOIT captain Danny Elser struck with his first of the game while on the five-on-three powerplay and he wasn't done there. Just 41 seconds later he scored his second of the game again on the same powerplay and UOIT was up 3-0.

The Gaels made a goalie change as Justin Fazio came in to replace Jack Flinn but the Ridgebacks offence was too much for Queen's tallying a fourth time to lead 4-0 after 40 minutes.

Slater Doggett managed to score in the opening seconds of the third to make it a 4-1 game but it was too little too late as Elser picked up a hat-trick with an empty-netter giving UOIT a 5-1 win.
