Thompson scores a pair as Gaels down Voyageurs 4-2

SUDBURY, Ont. (January 11, 2019) – A strong third period led the No.7 Queen's Gaels (14-5-0) to a 4-2 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs (5-12-1) on Friday night.

The Gaels win marks their second victory over the Voyageurs this season after a 3-2 on November 16 at the Memorial Centre. The two teams will square off another two times before the regular season comes to an end.

GAME FLOW
After taking an early penalty for goaltender interference, Slater Doggett was on the receiving end of a lengthy Stephen Gibson pass as he exited the penalty box and broke in all alone on a breakaway opportunity. He sent the shot under Laurentian goaltender Michael Giugovaz's glove for the game's opening goal. The goal was Doggett's team leading 13th of the season and second in consecutive games.

Later in the period, the Gaels converted on the powerplay as Liam Dunda sent a shot on net. The rebound kicked out to Henry Thompson who wired it past Giugovaz to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead.

However, the Gaels lead was short lived as the Voyageurs were able to tie the game before heading into the first intermission. This included a goal from Laurentian's leading scorer Nicolas Dionne who scored on a breakway with just two seconds remaining in the period.

After 20 minutes it looked like we were going to be in for a high scoring affair, however the second period turned out to be a defensive battle. Both teams were able to create scoring opportunities but both goaltenders stood their ground and kept the game tied at 2-2 heading into the second intermission.

The third period was a different story for the Gaels as excellent goaltending and consistent offensive pressure carried them to the victory. Justin Fazio made 10 key saves in the period including two point blank opportunities to keep his team within striking distance. His forwards would reward him when Alex Row wristed one into the net for his third goal of the season.

Moments later, Henry Thompson slid a loose puck around the pad of Giugovaz for his second goal of the game.

MUST SEE MOMENTS
Slater Doggett kicked off the game with this slick move on the breakaway. Justin Fazio once again comes up with a highlight save to keep the game tied.
