Bains goes head to head with Gray but Gaels fall to Voyageurs 85-72

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 26, 2019) – The Queen's Men's Basketball Team (9-9) fell to the Laurentian Voyageurs (10-8) 85-72 on Saturday night at the ARC – Main Gym.

BELL LET'S TALK GAMES
This Saturday marked the Gaels annual Bell Let's Talk games as women's and men's volleyball, women's and men's basketball and men's hockey hosted special Mental Health Awareness themed events throughout the day.

GAME FLOW
The visiting Voyageurs got the jump on the Gaels early on, starting the game on a 9-0 run and storming away to a 17-8 lead. The Voyageurs were led in the first quarter by Kadre Gray with 10 points.
 
Early in the second quarter, the Gaels held tight with the Voyageurs but struggled to go on a sustained scoring run. As the quarter wore on, the Gaels had little response for the Voyageurs dynamic play makers and the visiting team extended the lead a further nine points, taking a 44-26 lead to the half. 
 
The Voyageurs were led in the first half by Kadre Gray with 21 points and five rebounds, while Tanner Graham led the Gaels with 12 points and six rebounds. 
 
The Gaels came out strong after the half, opening the third quarter on a 14-7 run and getting the Laurentian lead down to as few as seven points. However, similar to the second quarter, the Voyageurs were able to go on a late-quarter run, re-extending the lead to fourteen points. After three quarters of play, the Gaels trailed 63-46.
 
In the final quarter, the Gaels battled hard but were never able to cut the lead down to single digits, with the visiting Voyageurs securing their 10th win of the season by a score of 85-72 and establishing 4th place alone in the OUA East standings.
 
Kadre Gray led Laurentian with 34 points, eight rebounds and six assists. For the Gaels, Jaz Bains put up 34 points of his own, most of them in the second half, while Tanner Graham had 10 rebounds. 
 
The Gaels and Voyageurs were tightly matched in most statistical categories, although the visitors did manage 10 more second chance points than the Gaels and shot a far better percentage from three (44% in in comparison to the Gaels' 32%).
