KINGSTON, Ont. (January 25, 2019) – The No.9 Queen's Gaels (16-7-0) got back in the win column after a 3-1 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs (6-15-1).
GAME FLOW
Both teams had opportunities on the powerplay within the opening ten minutes, however the Gaels'
Justin Fazio and the Voyageurs' Mackenzie Savard were up to task in net.
Action picked up near the end of the period. The Gaels had a 2-on-1 opportunity but after failing to get a shot off the Voyageurs created an opportunity on the opposite end of the ice. Laurentian's Ben Morris went in all alone on a breakaway but was stopped by Fazio with his left pad. Moments later, the Voyageurs had another breakaway opportunity as Derek Varrin tried to tuck one past Fazio. However, another key save kept the game scoreless after the first period.
Midway through the second period
Eric Margo connected for his third goal of the season and the opening goal of the game. Behind the net,
Jared Bethune sent the puck forward for Margo who managed to get the puck by Savard while taking a hit.
A few minutes later,
Slater Doggett continued his hot streak as he tallied the Gaels' second goal of the game. Doggett found some space and received a pass from
Nevin Guy setting him up for a breakaway. On the backhand, Doggett slid the puck through the five hole of Savard for his team-leading 17
th goal of the year.
However, the Voyageurs were able to cut into the deficit as with 1:40 remaining, Xavier Couture got Laurentian on the board.
After two periods, the Gaels were outshooting the Voyageurs 30-24.
The third period was a very conservative period from the Gaels who were keen on keeping their lead intact.
Justin Fazio made all 12 saves in the period and
Liam Dunda scored in the empty net to secure the win for the Gaels.
