GUELPH, Ont. (January 18, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (7-4) were defeated in their first regular season game of the New Year against the Guelph Gryphons (5-4). The scores of each set were 26-24, 22-25, 19-25, and 22-25.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels played a strong first set, maintaining a close back and forth game with the Gryphons. The Tricolour solidified their win on a three point streak nearing the end of the first with kills from
Malcolm Prentice and
Zac Hutcheson. Queen's won the first set with a score of 26-24.
Unfortunately the Gaels were unable to secure another win as the Gryphons found holes in the Queen's defence throughout the final three sets. The Gaels struggled in the second set making 10 errors and allowing Guelph to make 10 kills. The second set ended with a score of 25-22.
The Gaels were unable to regain their offensive momentum that they showed in the first set. Queen's made seven errors and only 11 kills in the third set, keeping them behind the Gryphons. The Tricolour tied the set at 14-14 but were unable to take the lead over Guelph. Queen's ultimately lost the third set with a score of 25-19.
The Gaels played a strong fourth set with 16 kills to the Guelph 14, but they were unable to take the lead to win the set. Queen's suffered six errors in the fourth and final set of the game, allowing the Gryphons to pull into the lead and win the game with a score of 25-22.
