Guelph, Ont. (January 18, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (6-4) were victorious in their first regular season game of the New Year as they visited the Guelph Gryphons (5-6) and came away with a 3-2 win. The scores of each set were 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 22-25 and 15-12.
GAME FLOW
In the first set the Queens Gaels took four straight points on the Gryphons, giving them the lead midway through the set. The Gaels carried this lead to the end of the first, winning the set with a score of 25-20.
The Gaels started out strong in the second, but Guelph shortened the Gaels lead to a score of 16-15. Ultimately the Gaels won the set with a score of 25-21 on a kill from
Isabelle Korchinski.
The Tricolour started the third set extremely strong but struggled to maintain their lead as the Gryphons racked up kills. The Gaels were unable to catch the Gryphons lead as they continued to make errors and struggled to find holes in the Guelph defence. The Gaels lost the third set with a score of 25-18.
In the fourth set the Gaels fell short to the Guelph offence, struggling to return kills made by the Gryphons. The Tricolour fought to regain their defensive momentum but they were unable to take the set. The Gaels lost the fourth with a score of 25-22.
The Gaels came back strong in the fifth and final set and led the Gryphons with a score of 8-7. Queen's battled to maintain their lead and closed the set with a winning score of 15-12. A kill by
Julia Wiercigroch ended with a block sent out of bounds for the Queen's win.
