WATERLOO, Ont. (January 19, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (6-5) were defeated in a five set game against the Waterloo Warriors (11-0). The scores of each set were 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 13-25 and 15-10.
GAME FLOW
In the first set the Queen's Gaels fell behind the Warriors early on but midway through the set the Gaels scored six straight points to close the gap on the Warriors. Another three point streak allowed Queen's to take the lead with a score of 20-19. Unfortunately the Gaels were unable to maintain this lead to the end of the first, ultimately losing the set with a score of 25-22.
The Gaels started out strong in the second, going point for point with the Warriors but Waterloo was able to find holes in the Queen's defence and took an eight point lead. The Gaels fought to catch the Warriors but they were unable to close the gap. The Warriors won the set with a score of 25-22 .
The Queen's Gaels were determined to take the third set and prevent the Warriors from winning the game in a sweep. The Gaels struggled early on but tied up the game with a score of 20-20. The Gaels took the lead on an attack error made by the Warriors and won the set with a score of 25-22 on a kill from
Saffron van der Linde who finished out the match with six blocks as well.
In the fourth set the Gaels took an early lead on the Warriors, making several unreturnable kills on the Waterloo defence.
Julia Wiercigroch,
Danielle Corrigan and
Caroline Livingston all made several kills in the fourth set and extended the Gaels lead. Queen's won the fourth set with a score of 25-13.
The Gaels held their own in the fifth and final set and but were unable to take the lead over the Warriors. Queen's battled to catch the Waterloo lead but were not able to win the set. The fifth set closed off a Queen's service error and a score of 15-10.
