TORONTO, Ont. (January 12, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (9-7-0-0) ran into a red-hot Toronto Varsity Blues (8-5-1-1) team and fell 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. After getting back in the win column last night, the Gaels were shut out by the Varsity Blues who won their fourth game in a row.
GAME FLOW
It was a fairly uneventful start to the game as both teams had limited offensive opportunities. However, the Varsity Blues were able to find the net as a weird bounce off the boards behind the net resulted in a loose puck caught behind Gaels' goaltender
Makenzy Arsenault. Toronto's Avery Henry was there to tap in the puck for the opening period's lone goal.
The Gaels had an early chance to start the second period as
Addi Halladay broke in on a contested breakaway. However, a great play by the defender forced Halladay to lose control of the puck and the Gaels first prime scoring opportunity was sent aside.
Later in the period, the Gaels had another scoring opportunity on the powerplay. A loose puck found its way to
Katrina Manoukarakis who was denied by Toronto's Erica Fryer who was strong all afternoon for the Varsity Blues.
The Varsity Blues who outshot the Gaels 9-3 in the frame controlled the third period. Their defensive pressure prevented the Gaels from creating any comeback opportunities.
BY THE NUMBERS
20 – Toronto's Erica Fryer saved all 20 shots that were sent her way.
6 – This was
Makenzy Arsenault's sixth start where she allowed one goal or fewer. She faced 21 shots as she came up big in the third to keep her team to within a single goal.
3 – This was the third time this season the Gaels have been shutout.
