Gaels dominate Varsity Blues with 4-0 win

TORONTO, Ont. (September 29, 2018) – The Queen's Gaels (7-2-1) were clicking on all levels at Richardson Stadium in their 4-0 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-5-2).

GAME FLOW
To start the first half, the Gaels pushed strong offensive plays on the Toronto Varsity Blues' defence and maintained fantastic ball control. The Gaels took the lead after a goal by Jenny Wolever (Mississauga, Ont.) in the 10th minute of the game after getting past two Varsity Blues defenders and finding the bottom right corner of the Toronto net.

The Tricolour continued their momentum throughout the first half, making several offensive runs towards the Toronto goal and playing strong defence, keeping the Varsity Blues from attempting a shot on goal.

In the 19
th
minute, Christie Gray (Vancouver, B.C.) found the back of the Toronto net on a header assisted by Wolever's corner kick on the right side.

In the second half , the Varsity Blues picked up intensity and began to fire shots on the Queen's goal but they were no match for the talents of Alexa MacLatchey-Gaudet (Upper Tantallon, N.S.). Wolever, and Alexandra Doane (Brookside, N.S.) attempted several more shots on goal but were unsuccessful until the 85th minute of the game.
Wolever
made a long break down the left side of the field with the ball and held her ground against the Varsity Blues. She finished by slipping it through the goalkeeper's legs to find the bottom right corner of the net. In injury time, Kelsie McGinn (Fredericton, N.B.) scored off an assist by Chloe Cabral (Kingston, Ont.).

Fantastic efforts made by the Queen's defence helped Alexa MacLatchey-Gaudet and the Gaels keep their clean sheet and ultimately win the game.

BY THE NUMBERS
1 – Kelsie McGinn scores her first career goal against the Toronto Varsity Blues

2 – Alexa MacLatchey-Gaudet made two saves for the clean sheet

6 – the Tricolour had six more corner kicks than the Varsity Blues indicating how heavily favoured the time of possession was for the Gaels.

FINAL SAY
"Six points was the goal for the weekend, yesterday was a tougher game [against Ryerson] away from home and to come home today and deal with back-to-backs in different cities, I think we did really well. Our back four have been really solid and the goalkeeping has been good," said head coach Dave McDowell.
