LAURIER PREVIEW
Both teams picked up week one victories last weekend to begin their 2018 campaigns. The Gaels were on the road and secured a 42-21 win over the York Lions.
Â
Despite the close contest throughout the first three quarters, the Gaels were able to pull away in the fourth and secure their first win of the season. A strong start considering they started the season 0-4 in 2017.
Â
Meanwhile, the Golden Hawks picked up a 39-21 in their season opener at home against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Â
After jumping out to a quick 16-3 lead after the first quarter, Laurier was able to cruise to victory as the Gee-Gees were never able to bring the score to within 10 points.
Â
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH
QB
Nate Hobbs – Queen's: Hobbs started his season off on the right foot with three passing touchdowns as well as one rushing touchdown. He'll be looking to build off his spectacular 2017 season with a strong performance against the Golden Hawks.
Â
LB
Will Bannatyne – Queen's: Bannatyne was named as the OUA's Defensive Player of the Week thanks to his momentum-changing forced fumble and recovery that put the Gaels in prime position for a touchdown drive against York. The linebacker, who recorded 13 tackles in eight games last season, will be playing a larger role in the Gaels defensive system already totalling 5.5 tackles in just one game.
Â
RB Levondre Gordon – Laurier: Gordon finished 4
th in rushing yards in 2017 and is already off to a hot start. In week one, he ran for 109 yards to go along with a pair of rushing touchdowns. As a team in week one, the Golden Hawks led the OUA in 219 rushing yards.
Â
DL Robbie Smith – Laurier: Smith led the OUA with 10.5 sacks in 2017. Last weekend Smith picked up where he left off recording another sack to go along with 4.5 tackles. He is a constant threat on the line of scrimmage and will be a tough test for the Gael's offensive line.
Â
2017 MATCHUP
Things were not pretty during last seasons meeting between the Gaels and Golden Hawks as Laurier came away with a 40-17 win at Richardson Stadium.
Â
The Gaels were able to keep things close and at one point held a 17-16 lead in the second quarter. However, the second half was a different story as the Golden Hawks held the Gaels scoreless on route to the blowout win.
Â
Laurier's Kurliegh Gittens Jr. had a monster 147-yard receiving game meanwhile the Golden Hawk defence recorded eight sacks and an interception off Gael's quarterback
Nate Hobbs.
Â
The Queen's offence was held to under 300 total yards, including just 89 rushing yards.
Â
However, despite the outcome the Gaels still lead the all-time series 11-10-0.
