KINGSTON, Ont. (February 10, 2018) - The No.8 Queen's Gaels (16-5), came back from own 21 but couldn't complete the comeback in overtime as the Ryerson Rams (11-10), defeated the Gaels 82-75 in the final home game of the regular season for Queen's.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels got off to a slow start but found the hoop for the first time of a three-pointer by
Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.).
Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.), who played in her last regular season game at the ARC tonight, soon followed with a mid-range jumper. The Rams got off to a good start on both sides of the court and got off to an early lead.
Sophie de Goede (Victoria) had a fantastic opening quarter, grabbing two offensive boards, and getting a steal that she took the distance for a layup. The Rams had troubles holding on to the ball in the opening frame as the Gaels racked up six steals in the first. The lights-out shooting of the Rams would allow them to hold the lead at the end of the quarter 22-14.
Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) got the Gaels on the board in the second with a big three-pointer. She also got herself a steal and layup on the next possession. The Tricolour fell victim to a big run by the Rams, leading by as much as 21 in the second quarter. The Rams were simply having an excellent shooting night. The Gaels were scrambling on offence, not able to find any good looks. The poor shooting by the Gaels costs them, as they trailed Ryerson 45-24 at halftime.
Dixon got the Gaels jump-started in the third picking up a steal that she took to the other end for a layup to open the second half. De Goede continued to be tenacious on the boards, as she scored on a tough second-chance layup. The Rams were still able to find open shots, and finish them, which kept the Gaels at arms-length all quarter.
Emma Ritcey (Orillia, Ont.) knocked down a buzzer-beating three to keep the Gaels within 15 at the end of the third.
Dixon opened the final quarter with a pull-up jumper, followed by a layup in traffic by de Goede. A big-time triple by Dixon put the Gaels within 10 and forced a timeout by the Rams. Dixon was the hero, in her final home game, as she found Alarie on a long outlet pass for a layup. The Rams let themselves go, making careless mistakes which allowed such a big comeback. Ritcey completed the comeback by hitting an impressive floater to tie it up the game with a minute and a half left. With 30 seconds left, the Rams scored from inside the paint for a layup to tie it up with less than two seconds left. The Gaels could not hit their last-second shot, forcing overtime.
The Rams took the early lead in OT, with a free throw, soon followed by a layup for a three-point lead. De Goede ended an overtime scoring drought with a three late into OT. She also got a pair of free-throws to go to put them within 5 with 30 seconds left. It would be too little too late, as Ryerson would walk away with the win.
