HAMILTON, Ont. (November 9, 2018) - The Queen's Gaels (2-3) lost in four sets to the McMaster Marauders (1-2) 15-25, 25-16, 25-27 and 18-25.
GAME FLOW
In the beginning of the first set, the Gaels and the Marauders were evenly tied at 4-4 until a kill from the Marauders began the momentum. The Gaels briefly broke up their run, taking two points off a kill from Julia Wiercigroch (Mississauga, Ont.) and an error. However, the Marauders continued to find holes in the Gael's defence, attaining a 10-point lead. Four kills by Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) nearing the end of the set slightly closed the gap in the McMaster lead but was not enough to over take the Marauders. The Gaels lost the set with a score of 15-25.
The Gaels started the second set much stronger with a kill and a service ace from Danielle Corrigan (Vancouver, B.C.). Queen's quickly lost their lead as McMaster tied the set 2-2. Possession of the lead was passed back and forth between the Gaels and the Marauders but a 6 point rally and a 5 point rally during the set snagged the lead for the Gaels. Kills by Saffron van der Linde, Wiercigroch and Livingston extended the lead and two errors for the Marauders ended the set with a score of 25-16 in favour of the Gaels.
In the third set, the Gaels and the Marauders played evenly matched early on with McMaster maintaining a small lead. With the score at 12-16 for the Marauders, Queen's found another offensive rhythm with a six-point rally to over take McMaster. Kills by Arielle Palermo (Burlington, Ont.) and Sierra Hardy (Oakville, Ont.) gave them a one-point lead. The Marauders quickly retaliated, stealing two points on the Gaels. Queen's tied the set at 25 with kills by Palermo and the set evenly matched again heading into extra points. Two errors made by the Gaels ended the set in favour of the Marauders with a score of 25-27.
In the fourth set, the Gaels held the lead early on but were over taken with a Marauder kill and service ace. The Gaels eventually found points off Livingston's back to back service aces but were unable to hold the lead for long. Several errors made by Queen's allowed McMaster to extend their lead and ultimately the Marauders took the set and the game off of two errors. The score of the final set was 18-25.
