Gaels stave off Rams comeback with fifth set victory

TORONTO, Ont. (November 2, 2018) - The Queen's Gaels (2-1) are victorious in a five-set road game against the Ryerson Rams (1-1) on Friday night.

GAME FLOW

In the first set, the Gaels took a small advantage early on but the Rams closed the gap to make the score 11-8. The Gaels extended their lead with kills from Mitchell Neuert (Toronto, Ont.), Zac Hutcheson (Kingston, Ont.) and Joel Rudd (Cambridge, Ont.). Queen's won the first set off a kill from Rudd 25-14.

The Gaels and Rams played an evenly matched second set early on but after the score was tied at 5-5, the Gaels took a lead off a serving rally by Hutcheson. Errors made by Ryerson extended the Queen's lead and a kill by Joel Rudd coupled with a block error from the Rams closed out the set 25-17 for Queen's.

The Rams took a strong third set, creating a lead after a tie at 7-7. Kills made by Shane Gabel (Winnipeg, Man.) helped the Gaels close the gap on the Ram's advantage but Queen's was unable to catch their lead. Ryerson capitalized on many offensive opportunities and the set closed with a score of 25-16 for the Rams.

The fourth set began in favour of the Rams, as Ryerson took an early lead. The Gaels tied up the set at 12-12 but the Ram's took an even greater six-point lead. Queen's continued to fight for kills but they were unable to catch the Ram's lead. The set closed on a Ryerson kill and a score of 25-19.

The Gaels took an early lead in the fifth set but the Ram's tied the score at 3-3. The lead was passed back and forth between Ryerson and Queens until the Gael's found kills from Neuert and Gabel. The Tricolour maintained this lead and won the set with a kill from Hutcheson and a score of 15-13.
