MONTREAL, Que. (October 5, 2018) – The Queen's Gaels (1-0-0) defeated the No.4 McGill Redmen (0-0-1) 2-1 in an overtime win on Friday night.
Although it's early, it was an important win for the Gaels as it was their only trip to McGill this season.
GAME FLOW
The anticipation for the 2018-19 campaign finally came to an end as they dropped the puck for the new season. However, it didn't take long for McGill find their first goal of the season.
Aaron Armstrong, who spent four seasons with the Ryerson Rams, scored the opening goal on
Justin Fazio who got the nod as the Gaels' season-opening goaltender.
Fazio did not let the early goal faze him as he closed the door for the remainder of the period.
The Redmen carried their 1-0 lead into the first intermission, outshooting the Gaels 11-8.
The second period was filled with penalties as the Gaels had four opportunities on the man advantage in the frame. On the other hand, the Redmen had a four-minute powerplay after
Liam Dunda was called for a spear and a double minor.
Nevin Guy scored the first goal of the Gaels' season on the powerplay as he found space in the slot to tie the game up. After suiting up for three games last season, Guy is off to a hot start with his third career goal as a Gael.
The third period was played tight defensively as both teams were held scoreless, which means we needed overtime to solve the first game of the season.
In overtime,
Duncan Campbell scored the winner to send the Gaels back to Kingston with the win. Campbell is no stranger to scoring big goals as last season he netted three goals, two of which were game-winners.
FAZIO'S DEBUT
In his first game as a Gael, Fazio shined against one of the most prolific offences in the OUA.
After allowing a goal just 2:10 into the opening period, Fazio was locked in making 32 saves against the OUA's second-highest scoring team in 2017. This opened the door for the Gaels and they capitalized on their opportunity.
MUST-SEE MOMENTS
