Defence and physicality leads to scoreless draw against Nipissing

NORTH BAY, Ont. (October 14, 2018) – The Queen's women's soccer team (8-2-4) were held scoreless in a 0-0 draw with the Nipissing Lakers (7-3-4). The result marks their second consecutive tie after levelling with Laurentian 1-1 yesterday afternoon.

GAME FLOW
The first half began with a couple of quick shots from both sides as goalkeepers Anna Stephenson (Queen's) and Jess Moran (Nipissing) were forced to stay on their toes early.

The first real opportunity came in the 18th minute as OUA goal leader, Jenny Wolever's shot rang off the crossbar.

In the closing minutes of the opening half both teams had a chance to convert, but Anna Stephen made a big save in the 39th minute. Then, on the other side of the field Jamie Foot sent a shot high in the 42nd minute.

The Gaels controlled the first 15 minutes out of the break as they put a couple more shots towards the goal.

Neither defence gave up any ground throughout the game as both offences were stifled.

The last opportunity of the game came in the 87th minute as Madison Logan sent a shot on net, but Anna Stephenson was there to make her third save of the game.

BY THE NUMBERS
5 – The Gaels outshot the Lakers by five throughout the game, but despite this 10-5 advantage they weren't able to find the back of the net.
12 – It was a physical game between two of the top five teams in the OUA as the Lakers were called for 12 fouls. However, their physical approach was successful as they limited the Gaels offensively.
2 – The Gaels have just two games remaining next weekend to try and hold on to their slim lead for the second seed in the OUA East.
