SUDBURY, Ont (January 6, 2018) – The No.7 Queen's Gaels (8-3-1-2) dropped their second game in as many days on Saturday, losing a 5-2 decision to the Laurentian Voyageurs (4-1-5-3). The game marked the first time this season that the Gaels have lost in regulation time.
The Gaels had plenty of powerplay chances to capitalize on but were unable to take advantage, going 0 for 5 in the game. Ellery Veerman and Annie Sheridan both scored twice to lead the Voyageurs to victory.
GAME FLOW
Queen's started off the game on the wrong foot when Sheridan was able to put the puck past netminder
Stephanie Pascal (Sudbury, Ont.) for the game's first goal at 8:51. Despite the goal against, the Gaels put together a pretty strong effort overall in the first period and outshot Laurentian 11-10. Two missed chances on the powerplay for Queen's would allow the Voyageurs to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The second period began with Sheridan scoring her second of the game, beating Pascal once again at 6:31 of the frame. The Gaels would fight back though, with
Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) scoring her first goal of the season late in the period to give Queen's new life heading into the final period down 2-1.
Just 2:55 into the third period,
Abby Lafreniere (Kirkland Lake, Ont.) would tally her career U SPORTS goal to bring the Gaels even with the Voyageurs. The rally would fall short though as the Voyageurs would score just over five minutes later to take a 3-2 lead, on a Veerman goal. Laurentian would add two late goals to close the game with a 5-2 victory over the Gaels.
Shanna Dolighan made 26 saves in the win for Laurentian while Pascal recorded 25 saves of her own in the loss.
