KINGSTON, Ont. (January 21, 2018) - The No.8 Queen's Gaels (10-3-2-3) suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Western Mustangs (10-2-5-2) in OUA women's hockey action on Sunday afternoon.
It was Kingston Ice Wolves appreciation day, and girls hockey players from the Greater Kingston Girls Hockey Association were on hand for the game between the two rival schools.
GAME FLOW
After putting up an impressive eight goals in Saturday afternoon's game, the Gaels came into Sunday against a tougher opponent in Western hoping to keep the offence going.Â
After a Gaels power play was cut short due to a penalty of their own, the Mustangs were able to take advantage of their abbreviated power play opportunity. Emma Pearson fired a seeing-eye point shot top shelf on Gaels goaltender
Stephanie Pascal (Sudbury, Ont.) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Just four minutes later, the Mustangs were able to capitalize on a Gaels miscue. Western broke in on a two-on-one opportunity, and Catherine O'Connor fed the puck to Brianna Rice who fired a shot just under the blocker of Pascal to make it 2-0.
Â
Queen's looked to quickly respond late in the frame when
Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) hopped off the bench and fired a slap shot that rang off the post and went wide.
In the second period, the Gaels still couldn't find any answers offensively as they tried to beat Western goaltender Carmen Lasis. The Mustangs were sound defensively in the period allowing just six Gaels shots on net.
In the third period, the Gaels looked to take advantage of Western's penalty trouble.Â
Queen's found themselves on the power play on three occasions in the first 13 minutes of the third but still could not find the back of the net.
With the Gaels net empty, Evra Levesque deposited the puck into the yawning cage to seal the Western win 3-0.
Pascal finished with 21 saves in the loss while Lasis totalled 25 saves in the shutout.
