No.7 Gaels comeback falls short in 61-53 loss to Ottawa

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 13, 2018) - The No.7 Gaels (11-3) were upset by the Ottawa Gee-Gees (9-5) in their second loss in as many days falling 61-53.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels started the game slowly on offence just like the night before against Carleton. Excellent interior defence prevented the Gee-Gees from really running away with it. Early points came from free-throws by Veronika Lavergne (Ottawa) and Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.). The first made FG came from Maddie Morris (Elgin, Ont), off a jump shot. Morris came through again late in the frame for a big 3-pointer, and Queen's finished the first quarter on top, 10-8.   Lavergne opened the second with a hook-shot, followed by another low-post shot by Priamo. The Gee-Gees managed to find weak spots in the Gaels' defence, and re-took the lead thanks to a 13-0 run, halting any momentum the Gaels had built. The second quarter finished with Ottawa in the lead, 35-21.

Priamo opened the third quarter with a jumper, which was quickly answered by the Gee-Gees. Half-way through the third, the Gaels began to mount a run, as they score seven unanswered. Sarah Safitch (Markham, Ont) knocked down a key 3-pointer, followed by a block by Lavergne, to bring the Gaels back within 10. The Gaels defence and turnovers by Ottawa were able to keep the deficit to just eight at the end of the third quarter.

Priamo knocked down a pair of free-throws after five scoreless minutes for Queen's. In the final minutes of the game, the Gee-Gees converted on a key 3-point play, to make it a double-digit gap once again. Late game scoring by Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.), kept the Gaels within single digits for the final seconds of the game, but it would not be enough. The Gee-Gees would take the win, with a final score of 61-53.

BY THE NUMBERS

FINAL SAY
"Percentage-wise shooting, we didn't take care of the ball or shoot the ball particularly well. We turned the ball over a number of times, and we were tight shooting the ball, and that's the reality of whether we make it far, is if we can make the tough shots when it counts." - Head coach Dave Wilson
