GAELS THIS WEEK – Women’s and Men’s Soccer host Ryerson in Games of the Week

Gaels This Week GAME OF THE WEEK
Soccer
The No.10 Queen's women's soccer team and the men's soccer team will look to pick up a pair of wins when they take on the visiting Ryerson Rams at Richardson Stadium in back-to-back action on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff times are set for 1pm for the women's side, followed by a 3:15 pm start for the men.

Women's Soccer
Following a 2-1 home victory against Trent, the No.10 Gaels women's soccer team (5-2-1) will look to keep the ball rolling with another Richardson Stadium win against the Rams (4-4-2).

The beginning of the 2017 season had Queen's stand at fifth spot on the U SPORTS top ten rankings. Since then, a pair of losses saw the Gaels rank fall to tenth. Exactly halfway through the regular season now, the tricolour will look to steadily rise as the season continues until playoffs.

Queen's and Ryerson met twice during regular season play last year – two matches that the Gaels came away with full points in 2-0 and 3-0 victories. The Queen's women's squad has not conceded a goal from the Rams since their 2014 season.

Following the Saturday match, the women will have a quick turnaround at Richardson Stadium and kickoff against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday at 1pm.

Men's Soccer
Coming off a tough draw against the Trent Excalibur, the Queen's men's soccer team (3-3-2) will be looking to bounce back as they battle it out with the Ryerson Rams (2-6-1) in a game of redemption on Saturday.

Last weekend, the Gaels drew 2-2 with the Excalibur in a game that saw three penalty kicks in regulation time. Although the Gaels held Trent to no shots on target, the Excalibur were able to capitalize on the pair of penalties awarded to them to take away a Queen's victory.

Like Queen's, the Rams also tied their last game 1-1 at home against the No.6 Toronto Varsity Blues. Despite a strong start to the 2017 season with a six game win streak, the Rams had to forfeit their first six victories due to a self-disclosed ineligible player. Since then, the Rams picked up back-to-back wins and a tie for a 2-6-1 record coming into the Queen's matchup.

The last time these two teams met was during the OUA quarterfinal last season when Queen's pushed the nationally ranked Rams to extra time in a chippy match where a red card was dealt to a Ryerson player. In extra time, rookie Gaels keeper Alex Jones (Comox, B.C.) saved a penalty kick to keep it scoreless. In the 112th minute, Jamie Baker scored for Ryerson to put the home team up 1-0 and lead them to the win.

The Gaels men's team will also take on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday at Richardson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:15pm.

Football
The Queen's football team (0-4) will be looking to pick up their first win on the road this Saturday when they make the long trek to Windsor to take on the Lancers (0-5). Game time is set for 1pm.

Men's Rugby
The Queen's men's rugby team (4-0) will look to continue their perfect season when they host the defending OUA Champion Guelph Gryphons (4-0) at Nixon Field on Saturday at 1 pm.

While both teams enter play undefeated, the Gaels enter the Guelph matchup especially hungry for a victory. Last year, the Gryphons ended the Queen's drive for their fifth consecutive Turner Trophy in a heartbreaking 24-23 overtime loss during the OUA Championship. It took three extra halves and two rounds of penalty kicks, but the Gryphons defeated the Gaels to take the OUA gold medal for the first time since 1998.

The two sides have become the elite programs in the OUA having met in three straight OUA championships.

Cross Country
The Queen's Cross Country team will hit the road and make their way south of the border to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to compete in the 44th Annual Paul Short Run this weekend hosted by Lehigh University.

Last weekend, women's cross country continued their reign atop the women's national rankings as transfer Brannna MacDougall (Kingston, Ont) registered the Gaels second consecutive individual and team win, crossing the Western Invitational finish line in 20:45, setting a course record in the process. The men's team meanwhile moved up one spot to No.5 after their second-place showing at the Western Invitational led by the second overall finish from Eric Wynands (Lyn, Ont.).

The Paul Short Run is the largest intercollegiate cross country meet in the United States with approximately 6,000 athletes from nearly 450 colleges and high schools slated to compete. The day-long event includes 14 races (six college, six high school and two open races) beginning at 9:30 am. Four of the five power conferences will be represented at Paul Short this year including the Southeastern Conference (Georgia, Miss. St.), Big 10 (Rutgers), Atlantic Coast (Georgia Tech), and the Pac 12 (Arizona) along with a number of U SPORTS schools.

Rowing
Making their way to Peterborough, the Gaels rowing team will compete in the annual head of the Trent regatta hosted by the Trent Excalibur on Saturday.

The Gaels had a strong showing at the Trent regatta last year as Alexander Bernst (Ottawa) headlined the day for Queen's finishing in first place in the Lightweight Men's 1X. For Bernst, his production continued as he joined the Lightweight Men's 8+ team who went on to finish in second place, just behind Western.

The Gaels had six other top three finishes as the lightweight men's 2x, lightweight women's 8+ and heavyweight women's 8+ were all able to place second overall in their races on the day.
