Late goal by UOIT leaves Gaels with 1-1 draw

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 23, 2017) – The Queen's men's soccer team (3-3-1) against the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks (3-4-1).

GAME FLOW
On a sunny day at Richardson Stadium, the Queen's Gaels took on the UOIT Ridgebacks. The Gaels played UOIT once previously this season on the road in their season opener - a game that the Gaels lost 1-0.

The run of play in the first half saw balanced attack from both sides. The Gaels got into a rhythm after a while and were able move the ball into Ridgebacks territory.
A strike from Keven Mastri (Oakville, Ont.) was the first to see the target for Queen's.

UOIT kept the pressure up, with three corners during the first half of action.

It was the Gaels who found the scoreboard just before the half. A Queen's cross found the head of Rory McParland who tipped the ball over the hands of the Ridgeback keeper to Patrick Van Belleghen (Kenora, Ont.). Calm, cool and collected, Van Belleghem slotted the ball on goal to put Queen's up 1-0 before the halftime whistle.

The Gaels looked to be in control deep into the second half with their 1-0 lead. In the 90th minute the Ridgebacks were awarded a penalty kick and the shot deflected off the bar and over the net.

Moments later, the Ridgebacks broke through as George Medistkos found the back of the net in injury time. The goal sealed a 1-1 draw.

BY THE NUMBERS
10 – Points for both teams on the season
2nd – Goal of the season for Van Belleghen
