Women's hockey Queen's Invitational Tournament, Gaels go 1-1

NAPANEE, Ont. - The Queen's women's hockey annual Invitational Tournament is set for puck-drop this afternoon in Napanee as the Gaels welcome McGill, Western and Ottawa to the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee, Ontario Friday and Saturday.

GAME 1 - Queen's 4, Ottawa 3 (OT)
The host Queen's Gaels picked up the first win of the annual Queen's Invitational tournament defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 4-3 in overtime on Friday evening in Napanee, Ontario.

Bridgid Goris got the Gaels on the board early in the opening period with a powerplay marker at 2:42 of the first period. 

In the second, the Gee-Gees quickly tied the game up just 35 seconds into the period. After a Queen's powerplay goal from Katrina Manoukarakis, the Gee-Gees scored a late shorthanded marker to even the score at 2-2 heading into the third.

After Ottawa stuck again to take a 3-2 lead, Queen's connected on their third powerplay goal of the game as Caroline DeBruin put a shot past the Ottawa goaltender.

The game then went into a five minute overtime where Addi Halladay was the hero for Queen's as the Gaels picked up a 4-3 win.

GAME 2 - McGill 4, Western 2
In the second game of the day the U SPORTS silver medalists made their return to the ice where they finished off the 2016-17 season in the national final.

GAME 3 - Queen's 3, McGill 5
The two winning teams faced off for the tournament title on Saturday afternoon as Old Four schools Queen's and McGill hit the ice.

The Martlets opened the scoring in the first as Jade Downie-Landry found the back of the net just 19 seconds in. She added her second of the game mid-way through the first and McGill had a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Queen's was able to fire back, Hailey Wilson scored a powerplay marker late in the opening period. Katrina Manoukarakis followed suit with a powerplay tally of her own early in the second to tie the game up at 2-2.

The two teams traded goals again and headed to the third period tied at 3-3. At the 13:48 mark of the third,  Marika Labrecque broke the deadlock to put the visitors ahead. McGill added a late empty netter to bring the game to a 5-3 final

GAME 4 - Ottawa 3, Western 1
The final game of the Queen's invitational saw the Gee-Gees pick up a win over Western 3-1 to go 1-1 at the tournament while the Mustangs fall to 0-2.
