Varsity Clubs Weekend Recap

Cycling
The Queen's Cycling team had a stellar weekend on the road at the Mansfield Outdoor Centre competing in Eliminator, Individual Time Trial, and Cross Country races.

The podium was all tricolour after the men's A team swept in overall results. Gaels cyclist Andrew Jonker finished first, followed by Cam Mcphaden in second and Jack Padega in third. During the cross country race, Queen's also took the top six spots with Gaels Mcphaden, Andrew Jonker, Chris Hatton, Padega, Ryan Jonker and Cole Schumacher leading the way. The eliminator race saw another Jonker victory as Andrew took the win, while McPhaden won the time trial race. In the women's A division, Hannah Simms won the eliminator and finished second overall.

The B division was also host to Gaels victories. Cam Rowe won the eliminator in the men's B division on Saturday and finished first overall, followed by Michael Fader who had a third overall finish. Caroline Wiseheart swept all three events, leading the Gaels and finishing first overall in the women's B division.

Field Hockey
The Gaels field hockey team showed a strong start to their season with two games at Guelph this weekend.  After a tight 2-2 draw in pre-season against McGill, the Gaels came out victorious with a 5-1 win over the Martlets. Fourth year captain Ciara Morrison put one past the McGill keeper, followed by a perfect short corner hit by second year defender Jess Alexander. Goals three and four went to rookie Jacinta Mallon. At half time, the score was 4-0 and Queen's was on a high, with the hope of keeping the goals flowing in the second half. Another well executed short corner saw Abrie Girgis open in space where she lifted the ball over the goalie into the top left hand corner to cap off the Gaels scoring.

The Gaels then met host and 2016 OUA silver medalists Guelph in the afternoon. In a high-intensity game, the Queen's midfield worked hard to keep possession and the defence was calm and collected. Gaels keeper Amanda kept a clean sheet until the half, demonstrating fantastic keeping and agility.
Going into the second half, Queen's had several opportunities, with 6 shots on net and many circle entries. With a couple minutes left on the clock, Guelph managed to get on the score board. Queen's continued to fight hard, but the game finished 1-0 to Guelph.

Next weekend the Gaels host Waterloo, Western and Guelph at Tindall field.

Men's Lacrosse
The Queen's men's lacrosse team hosted the Trent Excalibur in a night game under the lights at Miklas McCarney Field on Thursday. The Gaels suffered a 15-10 defeat to the Excalibur. A turnaround saw the tricolour on the road to Ottawa for a Sunday match up against the Ottawa Gee-Gees – a game that culminated in a 10-5 score for the Gee-Gees over Queen's.

The Gaels will look to rebound against Ottawa on Saturday when they host the Gee-Gees at Miklas-McCarney Field on Saturday at 4pm.

Golf
The Gaels varsity golf team had an excellent start to their 2017 season this weekend. Saturday opened the golf team's first tournament of the season at the Carleton University Invitational. The Queen's women's team took home the gold medal with a team total of 242, topping their long-term rivals, the Waterloo Warriors, by two strokes. Leading the women's team was third year player Melissa Ramnauth, who topped the field with her incredible score of 75 (+3), besting the second place finisher from Brock by five-strokes. Other women's team players contributing to the win were Robyn Campbell (82), Samantha Gold (85), and Sierra Singh (92). Rookie individual player Jacquie Miller posted a round of 91.

The men's team also had a great start to the season, as they took home the Bronze medal on Saturday, just missing out on second place by two-strokes and first place by only six. Leading the men's medaling team were rookie Michael Von Schalburg and second year player Myles Killackey, who both shot a score of 78. Other contributing players were Brad Burtch-Timmons (79), Trevor Corner (82), and Ciaran Sheahan (82). Jeremy Rose also captured the individual bronze medal on the day, as he shot a score of 77 to take home the honours. Other individual players for Queen's were Jack Anderson (83) and Lucas Travers (87).

The teams enjoyed even more success on Sunday at their home tournament, the Queen's Invitational. The Men's team took home the gold medal with a ten-stroke victory over second place Brock University. Leading the team and the field in scoring for the day was Myles Killackey who fired a 3-under 67 to also take home the individual gold medal honours. Trevor Corner also took home a medal, as he placed 3rd overall with his great score of 71 (+1). Jeremy Rose (74, +4), Chris Murray (76, +6), and Michael Von Schalburg (77, +7) all had great scores that contributed to the team win. Queen's was able to send two teams to their Invitational, and the 2nd team placed 6th out of 11 teams, with Jack Anderson coming in with the low team score of 73 (+3). Other team members were Lucas Travers (75, +5), Brad Burtch-Timmons (77, +7), and Ciaran Sheahan (86, +16).

The Women's team also took home another gold medal Sunday with a close one-stroke victory over the Waterloo Warriors. Leading the team and the women's field in scoring was Robyn Campbell, who shot a 4-over 78. Melissa Ramnauth came in with a score of 83 (+9), just two-strokes off of the podium, while Sierra Singh shot an 87 (+13), and Samantha Gold with a 92 (+18). The women's team also had some team members playing as individuals, which included rookie Jasmine Mussani, who placed 7th with a score of 89. Team member Steph Cheon came in with a score of 97.
