HAMILTON (February 24, 2017) - The Queen's Gaels (9-8) lost in straight sets on Friday night to the No.2 McMaster Marauders (16-0) in OUA men's volleyball action.
GAME FLOW
McMaster started off the opening set strong with four service points which included three straight blocks foreshadowing the events of the night. Although the Gaels fought back, with kills by Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.) the Marauders proved to be too much. Kills by Dylan Hunt (Aurora, Ont.) and Jamie Wright (Kingston, Ont.) put the Gaels back on the board but the Marauders lead 16-8 heading into the technical timeout. McMaster finished off the set 25-14 to take a 1-0 lead.
The Gaels opened the second set with a score of 4-1 to take the early advantage. A timeout called by McMaster put them right back into the game and they were able to not only tie up the score but take the lead at 5-4. Continuing this momentum the Marauders won the set with a score of 25-16.
The two teams came into the third game with pure determination. Playing an initial game in a point by point matchup the men were fighting for the match. At a score of 8-7 for McMaster Craig Ireland took control of the service line and served the Marauders to a 15-7 lead. It was that shift in power that led McMaster to their third and final set win of 25-15 to take the game 3-0.
