TROIS RIVIERES, Que. (November 4, 2017) – After a disappointing showing on Friday night, the Queen's Gaels (4-1-3) bounced back in a big way with a 2-1 overtime victory over the No. 9 UQTR Patriots (7-1-1) on Saturday afternoon in Trois Rivieres. The Gaels won the contest on a point shot from Duncan Campbell at 3:35 of overtime.
Jacob Brennan (Halifax) was solid between the pipes for Queen's and made 29 saves in the victory.
GAMEFLOW
The opening frame was the opposite of the previous evening's offensive outburst as both teams were only able to register seven shots a side in what turned out to be a scoreless first period. Brennan and Patriots goalie Sebastien Auger began what would turn out to be a battle of the goaltenders.
The second period saw more of the same as neither team was able to grab control of the game despite chances at both ends of the ice. UQTR would end up outshooting the Gaels 11-8 in the period but were unable to beat Brennan as the two sides would head into the third period scoreless.
The action picked up in the final period as the Patriots would open the scoring at 4:22 when Olivier Caouette beat Brennan for the game's first goal. Queen's would battle back though, as near the midway point of the period,
Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) turned a UQTR powerplay into a positive for the Gaels with a shorthanded marker. Assists would go to
Graeme Brown (Gananoque, Ont.) and
Warren Steele (Williamsburg, Ont.). Neither team was able to break the tie as an extra period would be needed to decide a winner.
In overtime, the Gaels were able to take home a much needed two points when Campbell ended things with a shot from the point that beat Auger and gave Queen's the 2-1 victory.
Brennan picked up the win in net for Queen's while Auger would record 24 saves in the loss for the Patriots.
