KINGSTON, Ont. (November 26, 2017) – The No. 8 Queen's Gaels (8-3-0-1) secured a thrilling, come from behind victory over the Ryerson Rams (3-3-4-2) on Sunday afternoon to keep their winning streak alive at nine games. The Gaels tied the game late in the third period before
Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) completed the comeback in overtime, backhanding a beautiful goal to send Queen's home with a 3-2 victory.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels came out swinging in the first period, controlling play for most of the frame. The tricolour were rewarded for their efforts when
Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) finished off an Alex Maw (Whitby, Ont.) pass to take a 1-0 lead. Queen's had chances to extend their lead, including two power play opportunities, but were unable to capitalize.
Ryerson started the second period much differently than the first as they were able to take control of the game, dominating the shot count 16-6 in the frame. At the 11:39 mark, Kayla Karbonik tied the game for the Rams on a scramble out in front of the Gaels net. Later in the period, Lauren Nicholson wired a wrist shot past
Stephanie Pascal (Sudbury, Ont.) to give Ryerson the lead heading into the third period.
Queen's pushed back in the third, as they tried valiantly for the tying goal. The Gaels looked to have the game tied when Kaylee Dennis (London, Ont.) put the puck past Rams goalie Rachel Seeley, but the goal was waved off, with the referee ruling that the puck was kicked in. Despite the adversity, the Gaels kept coming and were able to tie the game with less than 90 seconds remaining when
Hailey Wilson (Pickering, Ont.) turned on the jets and scored a breakaway goal.
In overtime, it only took 1:40 before Wakefield turned a one on one play into the game winning goal, scoring on a backhand shot to the top part of the net. It was Wakefield's third game winning goal of the season.
Pascal picked up the victory in net for the Gaels with 30 saves while Seeley took the loss in net for the Rams.
