GAME FLOW
The Gaels got things going early as
Landon Brickenden (Summerland, B.C.) and
Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont) added the first points on the evening. Waterloo sunk a big triple, however, early in the first to take their first lead.
Jaz Bains (Brampton, Ont) showed off his fast hands, and got a steal, and turned it into two points on the other end. Bains grabbed a defensive board and took it end-to-end for a buzzer beater to give the Gaels enough breathing room entering the 2nd quarter. The Gaels ended the 1st quarter leading 22-17.
Mike Shoveller (Arnprior, Ont) opened the 2nd quarter with a basket, followed soon by two more points from Bains. The Warriors bullied the Gaels inside, as they out rebounded them in the 2nd quarter. The extra effort helped close the gap for the Warriors. Waterloo took the lead again in the second after a terrific 3-point play by Simon Petrov. Bains got a quick shot to go off to help close the gap, but another triple by the Warriors gave them a two-possession lead. The 3's kept falling for the Warriors as the Gaels struggled to score. The Gaels ended the first half trailing 49-34.
Waterloo opened the 2nd half with a nice transition basket.
Quinton Gray (Richmond Hill, Ont), tried to gather some momentum for the Gaels adding a basket and free throws to his total. A 3-pointer by
Tanner Graham closed the gap to single digits, but Waterloo kept pushing. Late in the third, Bains grabbed a quick board, took it up, and found
Tanner Graham for a big three to cut the deficit to just five.
Quinton Gray got a steal and found Bains for another quick basket, but the Gaels still fell behind Waterloo entering the 4th quarter 67-61.
Queen's looked to stop the scoring barrage by the Warriors, to close the game. Waterloo did not slow down in the 4th, sinking jump shots with ease, while the Gaels struggled. A big 3-pointer by the Warriors, made it a 10-point gap again, mid-way through the fourth. The Gaels could not amass a scoring run, late in the frame, which would ultimately hand the game to the Warriors 87-75.
