Gaels finish Red Bird tournament 2-1, open OUA season Friday night

MONTREAL - The Queen's Gaels started off the Redbird Classic with a bang knocking off the Toronto Varsity Blues in double overtime 99-95 on Friday night. Queen's followed up that performance with a convincing 74-57 victory over StFX on Saturday before falling to McGill on Sunday.

The Gaels took on Old Four rivals the Toronto Varsity Blues in exhibition action and the two long-time foes took the game to double overtime to decide a winner. An evenly matched game throughout the Gaels outscored the Varsity Blues 11-7 in double overtime to take the victory.

Queen's was lead by the duo of Veronika Lavergne and Marianne Alarie who carried the weight offensively combining to shoot 48 of the Gaels 89 shots in the game. Lavergne finished with 26 points on 12 of 20 shooting while hauling in an impressive 22 rebounds. 

Alarie was 11-28 from the floor including 4-10 from the three finishing with a team-high 29 points while also picking up seven rebounds. Alarie's 10 attempts form beyond the arc made up the majority of the team total of 14 three-point attempts in the game.

Keyira Parkes had a big game for Toronto which included hitting a late three-point shot in the first overtime to tie the game up at 88-88 and force double OT.

QUEEN'S 74, StFX 57

After an exhausting double overtime victory on Friday, the Gaels were back on the hardwood Saturday taking on StFX from the AUS conference.

The Gaels saw a true team effort against StFX with 12 players seeing 10 or more minutes and eight Gaels registering six or more points. The X-Women were the ones who got the jump on the Gaels as they outscored Queen's 17-15 and 17-16 in the opening two quarters to take a three point lead at half time.

Queen's was able to rebound in the second half as they outscored StFX 16-10 in the third quarter and 27-13 to close out the final quarter for a 74-57 win. Lavergne finished with 11 points and eight rebounds while Myriam Fontaine had a strong game off the bench with nine points and six rebounds.

QUEEN'S 57, MCGILL 78

The Gaels closed out the Redbird classic with a match against the host McGill Martletts falling 78-57 to finish 2-1 over the weekend.

McGill outscored the Gaels in every quarter including a seven point margin in the second and nine point advantage in the final frame.

Queen's was led by Alarie who finished with 14 points while Lavergne notched another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Lavergne and teammate Abby Dixon were named to the tournament all-star team.
