Director's Message - Fall 2017

It has been a fantastic start to the 2017/18 season thus far and we are looking forward to even more exciting games, tournaments and competitions as the year progresses. Our teams have started the year strong (4 teams ranked in the U SPORTS top ten) and we are now looking ahead to playoffs for many of our fall sports – congratulations to our Baseball, Golf and Women's Ultimate Frisbee Varsity Clubs who captured medals this past weekend. Women's Rugby has secured a spot in both the OUA Final and National Championships, and our Women's Cross Country team still holds the #1 seed in Canada. The coming weeks will be very exciting for many of our teams as playoff spots are finalized – I encourage you to follow along through our website at gogaelsgo.com.

Over the past 7 weeks we have been incredibly busy here in Athletics, with special events and milestones such as:

·         The Athlete's BBQ on September 11th welcomed almost 1000 student-athletes back to campus for the 2017/18 year who are involved with Varsity Teams or Clubs

·         Congratulations to the 9 Queen's alum who were inducted into the Kingston Rowing Hall of Fame on September 16th. It was a fantastic evening celebrating the 40th anniversary of rowing in Kingston with over 200 people in attendance, and $20,000 raised.

·         Our varsity teams joined together to participate in the 18th annual CIBC Run for the Cure on October 1st and raised a total of $35,399 for the breast cancer research initiative

As always, the fall is a busy time for alumni events and reunions. Special mention to:

·         The 1997 Dunsmore Cup Championship Team who celebrated their 20th reunion on August 26th, and the 1992 Vanier Cup Championship Team who celebrated their 25th reunion on September 16th – both teams were honoured at the newly revitalized Richardson Stadium

·         The 1977 Men's Rugby team celebrated their 40th reunion by returning to Kingston for the September 16th weekend and had the chance to watch our current Men's Rugby team take on (and defeat) cross-town RMC

·         Men's Hockey hosted another successful Paul Stothart Memorial Golf Tournament, raising $15,000 for the team

We were pleased to welcome many of our alumni, supporters and friends back to campus this past weekend (October 13-15) for Homecoming 2017. It was a great weekend of reminiscing and connecting with members of our Gaels Family, both past and present. Multiple teams hosted events this weekend and welcomed back alumni of all ages – it is always great to see our current student-athletes connecting with alumni.

Thank you to all our donors, fans and friends who continue to support our programs – our success would not be possible without each and every one of you.  To impact the lives of our student-athletes, please visit gogaelsgo.com/championsclub to learn more.

Go Gaels Go!
