TORONTO Ont. (January 27, 2017) – The Gaels (5-7) were defeated in a hard fought game against the Ryerson Rams (9-3) losing in four sets 3-1. The scores of the sets finished 21-25, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-19, with the Gaels winning the first game then dropping three straight sets.
GAME FLOW
In the first set, Queen's started the game off trailing the Rams 3-0 as the home side jumped out to a quick lead.
Savannah de Groot (Ottawa) soon took control of the match, serving up two aces and helping the Gaels take the lead. Kills off of strong sets from
Sierra Hardy (Oakville, Ont.) kept the tricolour in the match, maintaining their lead. It was ultimately an attack error by the Rams that ended the set with a score of 25-21 in favour of the Gaels.
The second set the Gaels took a small lead to start but fell behind after a serving streak by Theanna Vernon of Ryerson. It was a back-and-forth set but the Rams took the lead at 20 points, holding the Gaels at 12. Later into the set, the Gaels put a pause on Ryerson's lead with
Anna Prust (Barrie, Ont.) serving. Queen's brought in five straight points, to get within two points of the Rams but Ryerson closed out the set on an ace.
With the game tied at 1-1, Queen's came into the third set slowly but built off of kills from
Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) and two aces from
Anna Prust (Barrie, Ont.). The Rams built up a 10 point lead however and ended the set on a kill to move ahead 2-1 in the match.
In the final set of the game the Gaels struggled to find attacking opportunities between the strong serves of the Ryerson Rams. Queen's fought their way back into the set but the Rams proved to be too strong. A kill form the Rams ended the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
Sisters Caroline and Veronica Livingston met for the second time this season and both had strong games for the Gaels and Rams respectively. Caroline finished with 10 kills and 12 digs while Veronica had 13 kills and four digs.
