WOMEN'S RUGBY
RECORD:Â 2-1 |
Last time out:Â L 32-0 @ McMaster |
STREAK:Â Lost 1 |
WHO'S HOT?: Jordi Di Nardo - Scored two first half tries against Toronto |
The No.5 women's rugby team plays their second Top 10 matchup in as many weeks when they host the No.2 Guelph Gryphons (3-0) on Saturday at 1pm on Nixon Field.Â
The Gaels suffered their first loss of the season last weekend at No.1 McMaster, 32-0. The game marked the first time Queen's has been shutout since the 2012 CIS Championships.
Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) is the leading scorer on the Gaels roster with 32 points this season, good for seventh in the OUA scoring race.
Guelph got the upper hand in both meetings of 2015, beating the Gaels in the final game of the regular season before doing the same in the OUA semi-finals. Both games last year were played at Guelph. So far this year, the Gryphons season opening 77-7 win has been the closest game for Guelph. With big shutout wins against Brock and Laurier, the top four scorers in the OUA are on the Gryphons lineup, led by Julie Schell.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
RECORD:Â 6-2 |
Last time out:Â W 2-0 vs. Toronto |
STREAK:Â Won 3 |
WHO'S HOT?: Madison Tyrell - Has three consecutive shutouts. Hasn't allowed a goal in over 270 minutes. |
Women's soccer is the first Queen's team to play under the lights on the revitalized Richardson Stadium, with a matchup against the No.1 Ottawa Gee-Gees (9-0) Friday at 7pm. The Gaels also play Sunday at Carleton (5-2-2) at 1pm.
Queen's blanked both Toronto and Ryerson last weekend at home, beating the Rams 2-0 before taking down the Varsity Blues 4-0.
Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) earned both clean sheets, and hasn't allowed a goal in the last three games.
Jenny Wolever (Toronto) earned three points on the weekend with an assist against Ryerson and a goal plus an assist against Toronto. Wolever's eight points this season have her tied for third in OUA scoring, while her five assists are second best in the conference. Against the Varsity Blues,
Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) also had a multi-point game, scoring twice.Â
The Gaels have already faced the undefeated Gee-Gees this season, falling 1-0 on a late goal from Kayla Da Costa-Pacheco. The game against Queen's is the only time Ottawa has been held to one goal this season. Last week, the Gee-Gees beat Nipissing and Laurentian 2-0. With the two clean sheets, Ottawa keeper Julie-Anne Lamarche is first in the OUA in goals against average and save percentage. Her four shutouts are tied for second best in the conference with Gaels keeper Tyrell. With three points last weekend, Katherine Bearne is tied for the team lead with six.
After Carleton lost to Queen's 1-0 two weeks ago, the Ravens hosted Laurentian and Nipissing. Abby Nicastro scored a pair of goals in Carleton's 3-1 win over Laurentian to tie the team leader, while Tori Macfarlane netted her first goals of the season last weekend, one against Laurentian, and the lone Ravens goal in a 1-1 tie with Nipissing.
MEN'S SOCCER
RECORD:Â 4-3-1 |
Last time out:Â L 4-0 vs. Toronto |
STREAK:Â Lost 3 |
WHO'S HOT?: Jacob Schroeter - With 4 goals and 2 assists, he leads the Gaels in points |
The men's soccer team hosts their Kingston, Ont. rivals RMC (0-8) Wednesday in a mid-week tilt at Miklas-McCarney Field at 5pm. This weekend, the Gaels head to Ottawa to square off with the No.6 Carleton Ravens (7-1-1) at 3:15pm on Sunday.
Queen's suffered their second and third losses of the season last weekend, falling 4-0 to both Ryerson and Toronto at home. The Gaels had some chances in both games, but were unable to capitalize. After he earned a red card two weeks ago, veteran defender
Kristian Zanette (Thunder Bay, Ont.) was out of the lineup against an undefeated Ryerson team.
RMC is yet to win a game this season. When the Paladins hosted Queen's earlier this season, the Gaels were 3-0 winners with goals from
Rohan Sarna (Mississauga, Ont.),
Oliver Coren (Toronto), and
Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa). Last weekend, RMC also lost to Ryerson and Toronto, falling 3-1 to the Varsity Blues and 6-0 to the Rams.
Carleton's only loss of the year also comes against Ryerson in a 4-1 game three weeks ago. Since then, the Ravens have won five straight games, allowing only three goals during their winning streak. Two of their goals against were scored in a contest with Queen's, where
Tonko Bacelic (Mississauga, Ont.) and a Carleton own goal were not enough to stop a Ravens 4-2 victory. Last weekend, Carleton beat Laurentian 1-0 and Nipissing 5-0.
MEN'S RUGBY
RECORD:Â 3-1 |
Last time out:Â W 27-11 vs. McMaster |
STREAK:Â Won 2 |
WHO'S HOT?: Dylan Young - Hit two penalty goals and didn't miss a conversion last week |
The men's rugby team hits the road again this weekend for a 5pm matchup with longtime rivals Western (3-1) on Saturday in London, Ont.
Last weekend, the Gaels defeated a McMaster team that handed Western their only loss of the year. In the 27-11 Queen's victory,
Dylan Young (Toronto) had the bulk of the Gaels points from his feet, kicking a pair of penalty goals to go with his conversion duties. The penalty goals are the first of the season for Young, who is now tied for eighth in OUA scoring with 24 points.
Kainoa Lloyd (Mississauga, Ont.) put down a try in the win to bring his season total to 44 points, which is the most in the OUA.
Western suffered a loss to McMaster 16-10 in their home opener to start the season. Since then, the Mustangs have picked up three consecutive wins against RMC, Toronto, and Trent. Cole Sopik leads the Western roster with five tries this year for 25 points, and Frederico Cisners does the bulk of the kicking for the Mustangs, recording 22 points so far this year.
CROSS COUNTRY
The No.10 men's and No.6 women's cross country teams travel to the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania this weekend.

Brianna Bradley (Kingston, Ont.) had the best individual finish of 21st overall.
ROWING
The men and women on the rowing team are looking to repeat last year's success at the Head of the Trent regatta in Peterborough, Ont. The Gaels had 11 top three finishes at last year's event.
