TORONTO (August 20, 2016) - The Queen's women's soccer team was in Toronto as the Varsity Blues hosted the annual Old Four exhibition tournament between Queen's, Western, McGill and Toronto. The Gaels open their regular season schedule on Saturday, September 3, with a home game against Nipissing.Â
DAY 2
Queen's faced the Western Mustangs on Sunday morning in the Consolation Final of the Old Four tournament, falling to their OUA rivals 1-0.
It was a scoreless draw through the opening half, with Gaels keeper
Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) turning away the only two shots of the first 45'.Â
In the second half, Vanessa Gugliette got Western on the board in the 71st minute on her team's fourth shot on target. Despite shot attempts from Gaels
Savannah Meyer-Clement (Oshawa, Ont.) and
Jenny Wolever (Toronto) in the dying minutes, Queen's ended the tournament with a pair of losses.Â
DAY 1
The Gaels fell 3-1 to the McGill Martlets Saturday evening to open their schedule at the Old Four Tournament.Â
Tara Bartram (Vancouver) got things started quickly for Queen's, finding the back of the net in the opening minutes of the game. McGill had the answer a minute later, when Claudia Agozzino knotted the score at 1-1 in the first five minutes. Before the first half came to a close, McGill's Daphnee Morency-Rous converted on a penalty kick to make the score 2-1 in favour of the Martlets.
Morency-Rous scored again to give McGill a 3-1 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Queen's mustered four shots on goal and won four corners, but couldn't make a successful comeback. Â
Gaels keepers
Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) and Marina Ribecca (Vancouver) shared the time in goal for Queen's, facing a total of eight shots on goal.Â
