TORONTO (February 27, 2016) - The Queen's women's volleyball team saw their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon as they fell in straight sets 26-24, 25-21, 25-19 to the Ryerson Rams in the OUA playoffs.
The Rams will now advance to the OUA Final Four with the win.
GAME FLOWThe Gaels and Rams traded points early and often in the first set, a trend which continued throughout. The Rams went up early but the Gaels stayed right with them,
Makayla Keith (Calgary) picked up an ace and an error gave the Gaels another to even the match at 7-7 in the early going. The Rams pulled ahead once again leading 16-14 at the technical timeout but the Gaels rallied and a kill by
Niki Slikboer (Seagrave, Ont.) put them ahead 20-18.
The Rams kept pace and a kill by Theanna Vernon from Ryerson evened the set at 24-24. Queen's called a timeout looking to regroup but the Rams snatched the set with two straight points off of a pair of kills from Jena Bonello and Sim Gill for a 26-24 win.
In the second set it was more of the same as the two teams traded leads throughout the early portion of the set. Queen's took a 16-15 lead at the technical timeout as
Shannon Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) put down a kill giving Queen's some momentum. Ryerson used the timeout to their advantage however and were able to rattle off six straight points taking a 21-16 lead. From there, they eased their way to a 25-21 set victory.
The final set had the Gaels playing catchup after Ryerson stretched their lead to seven points up 12-5 in the early going. Queen's did get the match back to within four points after
Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) served up an ace right at her sister Veronica on the Rams side. Ryerson kept their composure and used the early set advantage they had built up to take a 25-19 set win clinching the match 3-0 and giving them a trip to the OUA Final Four.
