OSHAWA, Ont.. (February 21, 2016) - Queens (1-2) fell 4-3 to UOIT (2-1) in Game 3 of the first round of the OUA Playoffs, officially bringing an end to their 2015-16 season.
The fourth and fifth place teams have had both Games one and two decided in overtime. The Gaels took the first game in Oshawa, and fell to the Ridgebacks this past Friday at the Memorial Centre. It is the only series so far that has been decided by three one goal games.
Game FlowIn the third and deciding game, the Gaels and Ridgebacks went back and forth for another tight matchup on Sunday afternoon. The home team was able to jump out in front early, taking a 1-0 lead less than five minutes in, Jesse Stoughton beat
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) for the second time in the series. Before the opening frame was over, the Gaels were able to convert on their second power play of the game.
Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) scored his first of the postseason to tie things up and one.
Queen's was unable to take advantage of the next two power plays they had, and instead it was UOIT who potted a shorthanded goal six minutes into the second, to take a 2-1 lead, it was their first shorthanded goal against all year. The Gaels scored a shorthanded goal of their own in game one, the first against UOIT all season.
They didn't let it slow down their momentum though, as just 1:34 later,
Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) scored his third of the series to tie things up. With a boost of confidence, the Gaels pushed their offensive pressure and netted another goal in the middle frame. EMing was on the board once again, giving his team a one goal lead and scoring his second of the game.
Ryan Bloom (Calgary, Alta.) also registered his second assist of the game and fifth point of the postseason.
The Ridgebacks needed to play catch up in the third, in a similar position to Game one at home. Early on they fired back and answered with a goal just over two minutes into the third period. To no one's surprise, it was another nail biter in Oshawa as the game came down to the wire before things were decided.
With only 2:01 remaining in regulation, UOIT jumped out in front with a goal by Danny Elser. It was his first of the playoffs, but proved to be just enough for the Ridgebacks to win. The Gaels put all they had into the final 121 seconds of play, but were not able to knot things up.
The UOIT Ridgebacks topped the Queen's Gaels 4-3 in the game, and won the first round series 2-1. The loss ends the Gaels season, where they finished with a strong (17-7-4) regular season record. UOIT will now advance to the play the OUA East leading UQTR Patriotes in the East semifinal.
