SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (February 20, 2016)- The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games on Saturday evening in northern Ontario, defeating the Algoma Thunderbirds by a score of 67-34 in their final road game of the regular season.
GAME FLOWSenior
Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) led all players with 16 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the field while tallying four rebounds and two assists.
Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) added 14 points, including a game-high three jumpers from beyond the arc to help the CIS No. 9 ranked Gaels improve to 14-3 on the season, maintaining their pace with the No. 4 Ryerson Rams (14-3) atop the OUA East division. Algoma, who was paced by a team-high 10 points from Mackenzie Robinson, falls to 1-18 on the season.
The visitors held their opponent to just six points in the opening quarter of play, but scored just eight points themselves in the second to hold a single-digit advantage heading into the halftime break. Wright helped the women break out in the second half, scoring nine of her 16 points in the final two quarters as the Gaels pulled away with a dominant third quarter where they silenced the Thunderbird offense. The 20-plus point advantage Queen's built for itself by the fourth quarter was more than enough for the victory.
Queen's used a strong game on the glass and on the defensive end of the floor, holding the hosts to a shooting efficiency of 22.6% and outrebounding the Thunderbirds 50-20. The Gaels shot 37.0% (27-73) from the field, and earned 16 points off 21 Algoma turnovers. They turned the ball over 10 less times than the Thunderbirds, and held their opponents to less than 40 points for the second time in the regular season.
